Information Competency is the ability to:
Recognize the need for information
Know where to obtain information
Choose the proper source and retrieve appropriate information
Organize, analyze, and synthesize information
Use and communicate information
From the above list, I would say I am a lot better now than I was at the start of this class. The information I have obtained while taking this classroom can never be measured! I never knew there was so much resource out there just waiting for me to tap into. I was stuck, like most people, in using only the Internet for my research, because it was so readily available, and even than I wasn't all that great at finding sites that were reliable. That was the problem, using vague searches because I didn't know there was a better and EASIER way to do my research.
I now have the tools and a good foundation to help better myself as a student, in the remaining time left I have, to make the most out of my research papers. I have learned the best resource to use depending on the subject of the paper. I now know the best way to cross reference, and more importantly, I know that there are other ways to research subjects. I have enjoyed relearning my love for knowledge, library and the world of resource that is out there. I will take this information with me long after my days of LBCC are up. I have 3 boys, that the generation is depending on in the future, and I look forward to passing this information along to them in their schooling!
I am an information competent student! I might not be the fastest, or smartest. but hey, I am a work in progress... ALWAYS!!
