Blog Reflection #5

I can not believe that the end of this class is here! It was a very informative class, and I enjoyed taking it. This was my first online class I have ever taken, and I will be the first to admit, it did kick my butt! I had a full plates this semester, not only academically, but personally. I have never had such a hard time keeping up with a class, and that is something I will take with me for next semester, when I once again will be taking online classes. I need to be more organized, I need to plan my time better.

This class challeneged me to think outside of the box, to learn things that I didn't know before. I also learned the "easiest way" does not mean it's the RIGHT WAY!

I have no doubts that this class will be benefical in next semester's classes. I look forward to applying the knowledge and skills learned in this class in all my furture classes.

I am on the fence on what I prefer more, online or face to face classes. They both have pro's and cons. Face to face is better, because you get feedback right away, but online is nice because you can work at all hours of the day. I think it really depends on the class you are taking on whether it is best to take face to face, or online! Some just do better with hands on learning. I think LIB3 works out great as an online class, and would be extremely curious to learn from what ever workshop was offered.

To my fellow students in LIB3, it has been great getting to know you all, great crowd of people! And finally to Ms Dena Laney, thanks for teaching some valuable tools that will be carried for years to come, and being an understanging teacher, it met and continues to mean a lot!

A million thanks to everyone this semester!

Blog Reflection #4

Information Competency is the ability to:
Recognize the need for information
Know where to obtain information
Choose the proper source and retrieve appropriate information
Organize, analyze, and synthesize information
Use and communicate information

From the above list, I would say I am a lot better now than I was at the start of this class. The information I have obtained while taking this classroom can never be measured! I never knew there was so much resource out there just waiting for me to tap into. I was stuck, like most people, in using only the Internet for my research, because it was so readily available, and even than I wasn't all that great at finding sites that were reliable. That was the problem, using vague searches because I didn't know there was a better and EASIER way to do my research.

I now have the tools and a good foundation to help better myself as a student, in the remaining time left I have, to make the most out of my research papers. I have learned the best resource to use depending on the subject of the paper. I now know the best way to cross reference, and more importantly, I know that there are other ways to research subjects. I have enjoyed relearning my love for knowledge, library and the world of resource that is out there. I will take this information with me long after my days of LBCC are up. I have 3 boys, that the generation is depending on in the future, and I look forward to passing this information along to them in their schooling!

I am an information competent student! I might not be the fastest, or smartest. but hey, I am a work in progress... ALWAYS!!

Blog Reflection 3

First and foremost I can't believe we are already half way through the class, can I get a yippee!!!

I have been a little overwhelmed at times by what needs to be done in this class, but than I try to remind myself to take a deep breath and just roll with the punches!

My eyes have been opened to the numerous ways one could research any given topic, including, but not limited to, the trusty library! I once again value the library system, I will tell you that!

I have enjoyed learning new techniques on how to use the Internet to research things as well. Before this class I only knew of the more popular search engines, and I would put one word in, and spend a lot of time weeding through websites/articles looking for the answer I was looking for.

Once overwhelmed ( and I will be honest, still am at times), I now have some important tools under my belt that make me confident in my research, and I plan to fine tune these skills long after this class is over, and use them to help my children in their research they will need for school!

Reflection 2

In the course of this class, I have learned a valuable lesson.... the Internet does not and should not replace a need and love for a library. Sure you can find a lot of the same information online that you can find in a book, but where is the interaction of a human being on the Internet. Half of the learning is the road it takes to get to the answer and the people you will meet in the process. Nothing can replace the way a human being can make you feel. With that said, no I do not think the Internet should ever replace the need of a library. You can't get lost in a good story on the Internet the way you can in a book. The Internet doesn't have the old worn smell to it. I think my view on the library has changed in the course of this library because I never gave them much thought, they were just another building, but now I have relearned the joys that the library can bring a person, the same feelings I felt as a child, they are fresh inside again. I will admit the Internet does still play a big role in my life, but not at the expense of the library anymore.

Blog reflection 1

I must say that this course has been nothing that I expected. it is more hands on and I actually am learning things that are new and fun. the things I have learned from this (blogging) to how to research subject headings have become valuable tools that i know i will use now and in the future. This is my first online course that has been this creative. I am enjoying this course immensely. I like the structure and how the assignments force you to learn what you are reading. I don't have any dislikes about the course only that I don't have the time to thoroughly enjoy it the way I should. I don't think I have had any a-ha moments yet, just a few "oh?!" and "Wow, did I just do that?" moments.

Project 1: Library Visit

The library I visited for this assignment and in general as a family is the Ruth "Bach" library. This library is in the Heartwell Park, on the corner of Bellflower and Carson St ( Ruth Bach Neighborhood Library 4055 Bellflower Blvd. 90808(562) 570-1038). It is probably one of the smaller libraries in the city of Long entirely might not have all the bells and whistles that some libraries offer, but I like it because it is right across the street, and although it is small, it offers everything I ( as well as my family) look for in a library. The main library is in all one room, with a small reference room off the children's section. It also has another room off the hall where the restrooms are at. I feel the library made good use out of the small space they have to work with. There is plenty of seating, both tables and small sofa's. This library also has great nature light, because of the huge floor to ceiling windows that cover almost a full wall, plus the children's section has great bay windows that open up to the park.

They have a nice selection of new and up to date books, and if they do not have the book at their library they are always great about getting the book from another library ( if available) within a few days. They have 4 computers for the public to use, and I like that they have them in the open, where the workers can easily moderator what people are doing and or looking at.

Bach library offers many of the same things that the larger libraries in the city offer. You can check out videos for a small daily fee, most of them appeared to be children shows. They have a nice selection of fiction, non fiction, romance, self help, cook books, mystery and autobiography. They have a smaller selection on the back corner wall, where they hold their "new" and best seller books. By most libraries standards it is small, but they appear to be holding their own, considering on any given day it has a nice amount of people attending it.

Some services this library offer are Toddler and Preschool story times, as well as a Summer Reading program for children to partake in. They are a wonderful library that generally seem enthused when children walk through their doors, always very welcoming.
Ruth "Bach" library runs off the Dewey system when it comes to classification. I am sure there should be something I don't like about this library, but there isn't. I enjoy walking with my family to this library after we have spent an afternoon in the park. I like that it is small, and inviting, almost family like. The people who work there are friendly, and encouraging. I guess if I had to pick one thing that I would like to see changed, it would be a bigger selection of new books, but I also know that the size of the library is gentility the reason for them lacking in this area, funding plays a huge part in this.
